England Lose One Day International To Australia Despite Harry Brook Heroics

England lose one-day international to Australia despite Harry Brook heroics

England were beaten by Australia by five wickets in the first One Day International at the Adelaide Oval

Jos Buttler's side were bowled out for 287 in 49.5 overs, with Brook top-scoring with 80 from 76 balls. Alex Carey (86) and Travis Head (69) then shared a century stand to guide Australia to victory with 13 balls to spare.

England's batting woes continue

England's top order once again failed to fire, with Jason Roy (10), Dawid Malan (16) and James Vince (5) all falling cheaply. Brook and Ben Stokes (42) rebuilt the innings, but England lost regular wickets thereafter, with Sam Curran (29) and Adil Rashid (23) the only other batsmen to reach double figures.

Australia's bowlers shared the wickets, with Mitchell Starc (3-43), Pat Cummins (2-57) and Cameron Green (2-63) the most successful.

Brook impresses again

Brook has been in excellent form for England in recent months, and he continued that form with another impressive innings in Adelaide. The 23-year-old hit eight fours and two sixes in his 80, and was unlucky not to reach his century.

Brook's innings was the only real bright spot in a disappointing day for England. The tourists will need to improve significantly in the remaining four matches of the series if they are to avoid a whitewash.

Carey and Head guide Australia to victory

Carey and Head put on a match-winning partnership of 103 runs for the fourth wicket to take Australia to victory. Carey was particularly impressive, hitting 10 fours and two sixes in his 86. Head, who was playing in his first ODI since 2018, also played well, hitting eight fours in his 69.

Australia's victory was their fourth in a row in ODIs against England, and they will be confident of completing a clean sweep in the remaining matches of the series.
